Icynene Attic Insulation Nationwide

Icynene Attic Insulation: The Pomona Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Icynene open-cell and closed-cell spray foam in Pomona, with most attic jobs running $2,800 to $6,400 installed and finished the same day. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably noticed your upstairs rooms baking in July, energy bills climbing, or worse - you poked your head into the attic and found the Icynene pulling away from the roof deck, crumbling at the edges, or showing moisture stains that weren’t there last spring. That’s a failed or failing spray foam application, and in Pomona’s hot-dry summers paired with cool damp winters, it doesn’t fix itself. We’ll tell you exactly what went wrong, whether it’s repairable, and what a proper re-application costs.

Which Icynene Models This Applies To

Most Pomona homes we service fall into two Icynene families: the Classic open-cell line (typically Classic Plus, Classic Ultra, or Classic Max) and ProSeal closed-cell. Open-cell is the most common retrofit we see in attic rooflines - it’s lighter, expands aggressively, and was pitched hard by builders through the 2000s and 2010s. Closed-cell (Icynene ProSeal, ProSeal LE) is denser and acts as both insulation and an air/vapor barrier, which matters a lot in attics where roof leaks or Pomona’s winter condensation cycles are a factor. The gotcha: Icynene open-cell and closed-cell can’t be swapped one-for-one without changing the attic’s moisture dynamics. If your original installer used open-cell against a roof deck and you’ve had condensation or mold, switching to closed-cell without addressing ventilation first makes it worse. Icynene itself was acquired by Huntsman Building Solutions in 2020, so newer cans and invoices may say Huntsman - same foam family, different label on the drum. For OEM versus aftermarket: we prefer genuine Icynene/Huntsman material for full re-sprays, and we’ll be honest with you when a quality aftermarket open-cell (we also stock Reflectix for radiant barrier retrofit layers) makes more sense on cost without sacrificing performance.

Signs Your Icynene Attic Insulation Is Failing

  • Rooms below the attic are 8-12 degrees hotter than the rest of the house in summer. Open-cell Icynene loses R-value if it was installed too thin, shrank after curing, or was never thick enough for Pomona’s 90-plus degree roof deck temperatures. The insulation’s still there - it’s just not doing enough.
  • You see gaps, cracks, or dark staining in the foam itself. Spray foam should be one continuous blanket. Cracks mean improper mix ratio at installation or excessive thermal cycling. Dark staining usually means moisture is moving through the foam - a sign the air seal has failed.
  • Utility bills crept up 20 to 30 percent year over year with no change in lifestyle. A functioning Icynene attic air seal keeps conditioned air in the house. Once it fails, your HVAC runs longer to hold the same temperature, and you pay for every lost cubic foot.
  • A musty or chemical smell near the attic access door, especially after rain. If closed-cell pulled away from the deck, Pomona’s winter rains find a path into the fiberglass batts or drywall behind it, and you get that damp, earthy smell. A lingering chemical odor months after install suggests the foam was applied off-ratio or too thick in a single pass.
  • You found rodent tunnels or nesting in the foam itself. Pomona’s older neighborhoods, around Ganesha Park or the tree-heavy streets south of Holt, see roof rat activity every fall. Rats chew open-cell foam like butter. Once tunnels are carved, the air barrier is compromised and the foam needs cutting out and re-spraying, not patching over.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Pomona attic between 1,000 and 1,400 square feet of roofline, full open-cell Icynene re-spray runs $2,800 to $4,600 installed. Closed-cell runs higher, typically $4,200 to $6,400, because the material cost is nearly double and the prep work (sealing off the attic, protecting the living space) takes longer. What drives the range: how much failed foam has to be cut out and bagged first, whether we’re re-spraying over a clean deck or doing removal of old contaminated foam, and whether your attic needs air sealing or venting corrections before we spray. Every quote is parts-plus-labor, upfront, in writing. All work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise - if the application isn’t right, we make it right, no back-and-forth. And if your repair lands over $250, you can take $50 off at billing. Call (626) 341-0830 for an exact number; a live person answers 24/7, not a voicemail tree.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnostic walk: run your hand near the roofline on a hot afternoon and feel for hot spots, check for visible cracking or staining, and run a utility bill comparison. What you should not do is attempt to re-spray Icynene yourself. Two-part spray foam requires calibrated equipment, proper PPE (the isocyanate component is a respiratory and skin hazard while wet), and precise temperature and humidity control at the deck surface. A botched DIY kit creates off-ratio foam that never cures properly, off-gasses for months, and costs more to fix than the original job would have. If your foam is cracked in one or two small areas, a professional can sometimes cut and re-spray just that section. If it’s pulling away across more than 15 to 20 percent of the deck, full re-spray is the honest fix. Call us at (626) 341-0830 - Neil Ashford will tell you straight whether it’s a patch job or a re-spray, and we won’t sell you a full replacement if a targeted repair gets you right.
